Women in Leadership and Decision Making

Women in Leadership and Decision Making
To achieve gender equality, women need equal access and participation in leadership and decision-making across all levels from the executive, legislature, judiciary and civil societies. However, women are globally underrepresented in leadership positions due to their lower financial status, conflicting roles at home and social norms and attitudes that women should not take up leadership roles. The highest level of power remains the furthest from achieving gender parity.
Women serve as Heads of State or Government in only 21 countries (10 women Heads of State and 13 women Heads of Government), while 119 countries have never had a woman leader. At the current rate, parity at the pinnacle of power will not be reached for another 130 years. (UN Women 2020)
