Women in Environment protection and Climate Change Today

Globally, women due to their lower economic status and dependency on natural resources are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change than men. Women in Kenya, particularly those in rural areas, depend on natural resources for their livelihood as they are responsible for providing water, food and fuel. Climate change also exacerbates gender based violence. For instance, scare natural resources may give rise to exploitative practices such as ‘sex for water’, ‘sex for fish’, women and girls are also forced to walk longer distances in search of firewood and water exposing them to sexual violence.

Dada Digital Initiative acknowledges that women bear traditional knowledge systems that are important in conserving the environment and mitigation against negative effects of climate change. We therefore not only highlight the effects of climate change on women, but also celebrate them as effective change agents against environmental degradation. We also educate women on the value of conserving the environment, how they can promote natural resource management and the available sustainable fuel sources they can substitute.
